Lone Superintendent Candidate Selected

The Levelland ISD Board of Trustees has named Rebecca McCutchen as lone finalist for the position of superintendent following a special meeting last week. The board spent six and half hours in executive session Monday and interviewed three finalists for the position before narrowing it down to McCutchen as the lone finalist. The board received more than 50 applications for the position of superintendent and held five interviews in the first round last month before narrowing it down to three finalists. “Speaking on behalf of the board, I am super excited about the future of Levelland ISD,” said Carrie Ellis, board president. “We trusted the process and we certainly appreciate all the assistance from the service center. We are pleased that we have the best candidate for the job.” Ellis said there is a 21-day waiting period between the announcement of the lone finalist and McCutchen being named the Levelland ISD superintendent. During that time, Ellis said the board will negotiate terms with McCutchen, including an official start date. McCutchen comes to Levelland ISD after spending more than 15 years at Alpine ISD. McCutchen has served as superintendent at Alpine ISD since 2015. Prior to that, she served as director of special education from July 2008 to June 2015, and before that was an educational diagnostician from July 2005 to June 2008. McCutchen began her career in education as a classroom teacher in 1997, having served Allamoore ISD, Midland ISD and Sierra Blanca ISD between 1997 and 2005 before joining the Alpine school district in July 2005 as an educational diagnostician. She earned her bachelor of science degree in December 1996 from Texas A&M University and a master’s of education from Sul Ross State University in December 2006. She earned her principal certification in December 2008 and her superintendent’s certification, both from Sul Ross University, in May 2012. She was named a finalist for Texas Top Five superintendent of the year in 2020, was named the 2020 Superintendent of the Year by the Region 18 Service Center, and served as president of the Texas Association of Rural Schools from 2018 to 2020.
